Moving on

As per my previous post, I’ve decided to move on from Ray. I won’t reveal any major details, other than to say that the game will be another interactive movie, though on a much larger scale than any of my previous games.

When figuring out what I wanted to create, I thought of things that are often neglected in video games. One thing we rarely see are games set in Australia, so that was a starting point. Being that I live in Australia, I felt as if I could voice the character myself – and so I have started! I bought the first decent microphone I could find:

Although my plate has piled up just a little more (along with writing, animation, asset creation, audio editing, sourcing music, programming, testing, optimisation …and so on), I find that voicing the protagonist has helped me become a little more comfortable with how I sound.

I decided to set the majority of the story in a post-apocalyptic world. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Australia and a post-apocalyptic setting is obviously Mad Max, but it won’t really be anything like that. The goal is to create something more like Fallout 1 or 2, but set in Australia, as a 2D interactive story with mechanics that will affect how your experience will unfold.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, for myself) this new game will be created in Flash. I’d like to move on to something a little more modern or accepted among the masses (like Unity), but there’s nothing that really allows you to design, animate and code on a timeline in a way where everything is integrated. Not like Flash. It’s hard to explain why it’s still so useful without demonstrating how intuitive it is. Plus it’s vector, so everything scales infinitely in either direction. For 2D animation and games, it’s still a very powerful tool. I also find that it gets a bit of a bad rap, largely due to misinformation being spread by the uninformed.

That’s about it for now – I may post updates every now and then, but I’d rather concentrate on creating the game. A lot of progress is being made, and for the first time in years I’m actually enjoying what I do!
